BECOMING A MENTEE
Being a mentee can be a great way to gain insights into the professional workplace, build skills and learn from professionals in a specific field. The USC Lambda LGBT Alumni Mentoring Program provides a framework for current LGBT students (undergraduate and graduate) to connect with alumni and other professionals who have experiences that match their interests. The program matches mentees with mentors and aims to provide the foundation necessary to establish a lasting professional relationship that is mutually enriching for both mentee and mentor.
The USC Lambda LGBT Alumni Mentoring Program connects LGBT and Ally students who are ready to prepare for their professional lives outside of the university. If you are selected as a mentee, you will be matched with a mentor who has chosen to spend their valuable time guiding your professional development. It is important that you respect their time and invest in creating a meaningful and transformational mentoring relationship by committing to spend roughly 20 hours with your mentor over the course of the year. A mentee’s responsibilities include:
•Maintaining communication with their mentor, either virtually or via face-to-face meetings.
•Participating in at least four substantive meetings with their mentor during the term of the program (Oct-May).
•Notifying their mentors in advance if they need to reschedule confirmed meetings, giving their mentor as much notice of scheduling changes as possible.
•Attend the Kick Off meeting on Oct. 18, and review the Mentorship Manual beforehand.
•Attend the Fall Event (date TBD), the Spring Event (date TBD), and the end of year celebration on April 29, 2018.
•Notifying the mentoring co-directors promptly if they cannot attend a mentorship program/event, if the mentorship relationship is not working, or if there is a breach in professionalism in the relationship.
Mentees are required to attend four mandatory events throughout the year. Please review the following calendar of events to confirm that you are available to participate:
•Wednesday, Oct. 18: Kick Off Meeting, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
•TBD: Fall Event, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
•TBD: Spring Event, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
•Sunday, April 29: New Scholars Reception and Celebration, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
To help facilitate interactions with other mentors and mentees, additional optional events will be offered to program participants throughout the year.
If you have questions or concerns about the meetings, events, or the overall program, please contact the USC Lambda LGBT Alumni Director, Miguel A. Vásquez, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our goal is to match mentors and mentees based on similar professional fields whenever possible. When that is not possible, we will match you with a mentor who shares some of your interests and has skills/strengths that will help you in your professional journey. Ultimately, we believe the ideal mentorship dynamic is between a mentor willing to teach and guide, through their life experiences, and a mentee open to learning.
Applying to be a Mentee
The application to be a mentee is online and consists of four sections that ask about your background as well as your aspirations and professional goals. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, though the final deadline to apply is Sept. 15, 2017.
